Highlights for the Town of Hilton Head Island

  • Late this week, FEMA approved clearing of debris off the streets in the following neighborhoods: Ashton Cove, Barony Woods, Beach City Center, Bermuda Pointe, Brighton Bay, Chinaberry Ridge, Crosswinds, Middleton Place, Oakview, Sea Grass Landing, Shelter Cove, Spanish Pointe, Timbercrest, Victoria Square, Wells East and Yacht Cove. The Town will begin clearing debris in these communities as soon as schedules can be adjusted.
  • FEMA asked for additional information regarding several other neighborhoods where documentation was incomplete. The Town continues to solicit documentation from subdivisions and neighborhoods with private roads that are in need of town assistance with debris clearance.

  • The FEMA Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) continues to offer walk-in services for those who have been impacted by Hurricane Matthew. The DRC is located in the Town Council Chambers, 1 Town Center Court, and is open Thursdays and Fridays from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm; and on Saturdays from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm.

  • In addition to the DRC, FEMA has teams of people walking every street on the Island, knocking on doors and seeking out those who may have been impacted.

  • Remember that the deadline for filing for FEMA individual assistance is December 13th.

  • Remember also that those wishing to volunteer and those in need of assistance can call 843-524-HELP. Our non-profit and faith communities are here for those in need.

  • The State has set up a toll free hotline for those needing legal assistance in the aftermath of Matthew, but who are unable to afford an attorney. Call 877-797-2227 extension 120.

  • The Concours d' Elegance and Motoring Festival took place this past weekend to accolades from car owners, sponsors, and guests. All were amazed that such an event could be accomplished so soon after the storm. Heritage Golf Group did a superb job in cleaning up the property and their facilities. Area hotels and restaurants reported a busy weekend. National press reports on what was accomplished in order to host this event have been extremely positive.

  • Town Parks opened this week include: Driessen Beach Park and Islanders Beach Park.

  • County Facilities that have reopened include: Old House Creek Dock; Broad Creek Boat Ramp; and the Marshland Road Boat Ramp.

  • Over half a million cubic yards of debris have been cleared from the roads and processed at Honey Horn and Chaplin Park.

  • FEMA conducted a Kick-Off meeting this week with Town Staff, a team of FEMA experts, and the SC Emergency Management Department (SCEMD). This starts the process for filing for reimbursement from FEMA for storm-related costs. FEMA teams will tour the Island next week and regular communications will occur as both FEMA and the SCEMD Staffs assist our employees in filing the proper forms and documentation to qualify for reimbursement.

  • A preliminary estimate indicates that more than $55 million dollars will be required for clean-up and repair costs in the Town. This includes $35 million for debris clearing and removal; $6 million in additional beach restoration costs; and $3 million in storm drainage system clean-up and repairs. Costs for overtime, and related employee costs, repair and replacement of equipment, fuel costs, and a $5 million contingency are included; but costs to repair roads, pathways, parks and other public facilities have not yet been estimated, nor have marine debris clean-up costs - which we are expecting the State to address.

  • Most of these costs will be eligible for FEMA reimbursement at 75%. In recent storms, the State of South Carolina has covered all or part of the 25% "local match" and we will be lobbying for similar consideration for all parts of the State impacted by Hurricane Matthew. With our strong financial reserves and expectations of FEMA reimbursement on a timely basis for much of the debris costs, we expect to be able to manage cash flow so that we can continue to aggressively rebuild our community.
