Father’s Day raises the eternal questions: Should I get him a tie again? How about getting him something for the foodie that lurks within?
Let’s start with liquid refreshments...
Help dad take beer to the next level with a home brewing kit. We found this one at Growlers Craft Beer & Ales at The Plaza at Shelter Cove for $26.99. Add in the Growlers’ Jug for $4.99, plus the cost of your choice of beer. The pint glasses are four for $10. Visit the shop or go to www.growlerstaproom.com.
How cool is the wine wheel? It helps dad peg which wine goes best with a variety of dishes, from pasta to meats to desserts and more. We found this for a mere $2.99 at Rollers Liquor & Party Store, 6 Lagoon Road, Hilton Head Island (785-3614)
These wines range from $59.99 to 175.99 at Rollers Liquor & Party Store, 6 Lagoon Road, Hilton Head Island (785-3614).
These stoppers, also from Rollers, include a wine preserver for $6.99; a golf ball stopper for $5.99; a silver stopper for $5.99; and a cork-pops wine opener for $15.99. This screw-pull wine opener is $150 at Le Cookery in the Village at Wexford www.lecookeryusa.com.
And on the subject of wine, our in-house expert, Chris Widnell suggests a variety of wine accessories, including:
- Corkscrews. The powerful lever models are becoming increasingly popular. The cheaper models are best avoided, since they have a rather high failure rate. Instead, consider the more substantial Vertical Rabbit or Screwpull ($64 and $81 at LeCookery), which should provide years of service. At the simple end of the spectrum, the waiter style corkscrews are both convenient and reliable, with the double hinge models the best. Ones such as the Pulltap can be found at local wine stores and cost less than $10.
- Decanters. Several models can be found at Le Cookery, in the range of $40-$120.
- To add some humor to the day, consider “The Wine Snob’s Dictionary,” by David Kamp and David Lynch ($13, paperback, at Barnes and Noble).
For the barista in your dad, you can go with the Secco Espresso Machine for $256, or the blanket and thermos coffee travel bag for $41.30, both at Le Cookery in the
Village at Wexford www.lecookeryusa.com.
You can also choose to go smaller with this coffee mug for $7.95; a half pound of beans for $6.50, or this hat for $15.95. They can all be found at Java Joes in Coligny Plaza www.javajoeshiltonhead.net.

At Fireside at 19 Sheridan Park Circle in Bluffton, we found this grill wok for $14.99 and this men’s grilling apron for $18.95.
