The Tomato Man
One of the people who support and benefit from the “grown locally” movement is “The Tomato Man, shown above left. He’s a common sight around Hilton Head (his real name is Bill, but he likes to be known only as The Tomato Man and didn’t want to provide his last name). He buys tomatoes from local farmers and sells them to island restaurants ranging from Michael Anthony and Charlie’s Crab to the Sea Shack and Gruby’s Deli.
The Tomato Man does a thriving business that echoes his native islander heritage. “Not that long ago, the north end of Hilton Head Island was covered with tomato farms,” he said. Now he travels the Lowcountry and sometimes as far as Columbia for top quality products. “Our tomatoes have a certain tang. I know they’re good when I see the chefs eating them,” he said.
