Harmony for HABITAT

A Cappella show on October 6, 2008.

World Habitat Day on October 6, 2008, the a capella concert, Harmony for Habitat,To celebrate World Habitat Day on October 6, 2008, the a capella concert, Harmony for Habitat, will take place and will feature barbershop-style harmony and other a cappella singing from around the Coastal Empire to benefit Hilton Head Regional Habitat for Humanity and commemorate World Habitat Day 2008.

The Hilton Head Lighthouse Chorus has a well-deserved reputation for supporting local charities via their community support program. In the past year, they’ve produced a benefit for Deep Well, donated $1,000 to the Bluffton High School Music Program, performed, and made a donation at the Hearts for Henry benefit concert. So, when Sing-Out Chairperson Paul Jacobson presented the idea for the Habitat for Humanity benefit to the chorus board of directors, it didn’t take much to persuade them.

Jacobson then approached Pat Wirth, the executive director of the Hilton Head Regional Habitat for Humanity, with the idea. With the Barbershop Chorus and Hilton Head Regional Habitat for Humanity on board, Jacobson had no problem finding willing performers, and habitat volunteers pitched in, as they always do.

“When you ask people to help provide secure, safe, comfortable housing for their Lowcountry neighbors, it doesn’t take much persuading,” said Jacobson. “Every day many local volunteers travel to Ridgeland to pound and paint and plant to build houses for Lowcountry families. Many of the people performing in our concert can’t swing a hammer or raise a roof, but they’re very able and willing to raise their voices to help buy the supplies needed to construct habitat homes.”

In addition to the Hilton Head Lighthouse Chorus, the program will feature the Hilton Head Shore Notes, the Sun City Chorus, the Beaufort Harbormasters Chorus, and several quartets from within each of those choruses, as well as an ensemble from Bluffton High School. Individual performers featured on the program include gospel singer Pressana Grant, soprano Barbara Loosbrock, soprano and jazz vocalist Carole Galli, and baritone Paul Gibson. Jacobson is quick to point out that, in addition to barbershop, the program will include patriotic, dixieland, jazz, gospel, doo wop, and a special recitation by Louise Miller Cohen. Reggie Deas will provide the big finish to a fabulous evening as he leads an a cappella quartet from Deas Guyz, one of the Lowcountry’s most popular performing groups.

Tickets for the 7 p.m., Monday, October 6 concert are $20 and are available at Burkes Pharmacy at Main Street, Tail-Waggers in Coligny Plaza, the Habitat Resale Shop in Bluffton, and at the Hilton Head Regional Habitat for Humanity office in Brendan Woods.
