After living in 13 different communities during their married life, Gene and Denise Conahan of Colleyville, Texas, have finally settled on their haven they will soon call their permanent home.
The Conahans, originally from Philadelphia, often vacationed on Hilton Head while living in Greenville. When the couple joined forces with H2 Builders in 2008 they knew they had plans for the perfect home in the perfect location:
Bluffton’s Belfair.
“It is now our haven,” said Denise from their home about halfway between Dallas and Fort Worth. “At first we fell in love with Hilton Head, then with Belfair, and then with Bluffton — we just love the way old town Bluffton is lovely and small. We hope to move there permanently by the end of next year. It’s a great house for having friends and family and entertaining. It’s a wonderful gathering place for our children.”
Initially, the Conahans were a bit concerned about building their new home “from scratch” and from a long distance, Denise said. “But, H2 Builders were wonderful and easy to work with. They have a great system, and there was no problem being here while the home was being built. We love every detail.”
The Conahans’ 4,650-square-foot home exudes a “casual elegance,” according to Gus Hetzel, executive vice president of sales and client relations for H2 Builders. “It has a beautiful summer kitchen near the pool and spa, along with extraordinary views of the golf course.”
The kitchen combines utility and style with a large pantry that allows hideaway prep work for the chef, while remaining open and inviting to family and friends in the adjoining family and living rooms. As with most of the home, the kitchen has custom cabinetry.
“I love the way the kitchen is laid out, everything’s in reach,” she said.
Floors throughout the home are hand-scraped hardwood, and the ceilings dazzle with “incredible, custom details,” Hetzel said.
Throughout, the home’s mill work carries a sense of craftsmanship, including raised panel wainscoting, paneled interior columns at the dining room, and large crown moldings.
“The light-colored woodwork and cabinetry combined with the darker floors gives a very comfortable feeling,” Denise said.
Back outdoors, “the home also has a nice outdoor fire pit for entertaining and gathering which creates a perfect social setting,” Hetzel said. “The pool deck is all sand set by American Paving Design, as is the driveway.”
Between two second-floor guest bedrooms is a sitting room that opens upon a balcony with views of the golf course. Bathrooms have stone floors. The master bath has separate vanities with a roman shower and freestanding tub.
“Our home is very solidly-built and is so quiet,” Denise said. “There’s nothing extravagant. We wanted it to be comfortable. We are happy every time we walk in the door.”
