Suspect arrested in Shelter Cove break-in

The following came in from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office

Oct. 10, 2011

A Hilton Head Island man was arrested yesterday after leading deputies on a brief vehicle pursuit following a car break-in at a mid-island park.

Forty-seven year old Charles Coleman was charged with one count of Breaking into a Motor Vehicle and one count of Petit Larceny after being positively identified as the suspect observed in the area of a burglarized vehicle at Shelter Cove Community Park. Deputies responded to the park at approximately 11:30 am after a victim found a window of his 1998 Chevy Silverado smashed.

The victim reported seeing a suspicious male walking near his vehicle as he and his wife were walking in the park. Upon returning to the vehicle and discovering the damage, he observed the subject leaving in a white Ford F150 pickup truck. The victim advised that his wife’s purse was missing from the vehicle.

As deputies patrolled the area, a truck matching the description provided was observed traveling on Dillon Rd. A traffic stop was initiated, at which time deputies made contact with the driver and sole occupant, Coleman. Deputies observed a ladies’ purse in the truck, and Coleman was asked to step out of the vehicle. Coleman refused to comply, however, and sped off, leading deputies on a brief pursuit throughout the North end of the island. Eventually Coleman did stop and was taken into custody without incident.

The purse in the truck was quickly identified as the purse stolen from the park, and the victim was able to identify Coleman as the individual he’d seen before the break-in. Coleman was transported to the Beaufort County Detention Center where he currently remains awaiting bond hearings.

Can you hear us now? The story of mobile service on Hilton Head

cellIn today’s world, our phones are nothing less than our lifelines to the world. We use them to stay in touch with family and friends, we use them for work, we use them for weather and banking and Scrabble and Facebook and listening to music and picking a decent local seafood place for dinner. We revere them as distractions, yet we rely on them in emergencies.

Friday night lights in the Lowcountry: Let the games begin

atprep_008

With no professional or college football teams in this little corner of the world, high school football reigns supreme each fall in the Lowcountry. Thousands of people pack stadiums at Hilton Head High, Bluffton, Hilton Head Christian and Hilton Head Preparatory each week for our own version of Friday night lights.

Of course, our version doesn’t always include the lights.

In line with the island’s quirky style, Hilton Head Prep has no stadium lights and plays its home games in the middle of the day under the burning Carolina sun, usually on Fridays, but occasionally on Saturdays.
